Water damage in New York, what does it cost? The costs to put everything back to the way it was is really hard to quantify, simply because it depends on the extent of the damage. This is why you when you call a flood water specialist, an estimate will first be done before they start working.

But what causes water damage? Well, the most common is busted pipes. If you have been living in New York for quite some time and haven’t checked the pipes in the bathroom or the kitchen, the day may come when you notice a leak and there is water all over your floor.

Flooding can also occur due to tub, sink or toilet overflow. These situations are ones that could be avoided and easy to control but it could get ugly should you face this situation as a result of a storm or heavy rains.

There are three categories which you should know that classify water damage. When it is classified as a category 1, the water which has flooded your home is clean, which means it is not harmful to humans.

Category 2 is cause for a little more concern. The worry when it is a category 2 water damage, also known as “grey water”, is there could be biological and physical contaminants that are known to cause discomfort and sickness.

Category 3, or “black water”, is the worst because it is very unsanitary. It may contain bacteria and fungi similar to that of category 2. The difference is that it has stayed in your residence for more than 72 hours. Knowing what category it is will determine what type of removal method the flood water specialist will use. Just be sure that whoever you call is a certified so the job will be done right the first time.

When you have water damage in New York and are wondering about the costs, check to see if this is covered under your home insurance policy. When you look at the document, see if you can find the words “sewer and drain coverage.”

If it is covered under your policy, see if the flood water specialist can coordinate with your insurance provider for payment. If it is not there, you will have to pay for their services. Once everything is settled, make sure that you put this coverage in your policy when you renew.  Just remember that this can happen again when you least expect it.
