Recovering From Home Damage
If your home was recently damaged in a storm it may seem like the end of the world. Tornadoes, wind storms, hail, and other meteorological events can cause severe damage to a home. Some of this damage is plain to see, others might be hidden inside the structure and take years to become obvious. If your home has been damaged in a storm you need to not only do your part to repair it right away but get in touch with a contractor as soon as possible to have them take a look at your home. Only a trained professional can identify deep structural damage. In addition you will probably need their services to repair it as well.
When a strong storm hits your home and causes damage to the outside structure, forces can act on the inside support beams weakening them. This damage can go completely undetected until the next storm comes. There are steps that professionals can take to look through and detect this damage within your home. They can look for and see things that you would never be able to. They also will have specialized equipment to look at the structure of your home and determine how sound it is. The equipment plus their trained eye will give them an advantage at finding the hidden storm damage that you cannot see.
They can also repair the damage that they find. If you do get a contractor out and he does find additional damage to your home you should call around and see what other contractors you can get out there to take a look. Many times they will come out and give estimates on known problems for free. To have them do a once over on your home and look for problems may involve a small fee or may not, it really depends on the contractor and what kind of a relationship you have with them.
Structural damage to your home can be expensive to fix but it should be covered under your home owners insurance. If you wait to have these problems addressed later they may no longer be covered under your policy. Most will cover immediate damage to the home, but pervasive conditions that form over time are not covered. If you have a problem some time down the road it can be difficult to get an insurance company to cover the repairs. The best thing to do is have someone come out right away and check your home. Get the work done immediately so that you can make sure that you are covered. Consult with your insurance salesman to see what the company will and will not help you with. They should also be able to help recommend a contractor to work with.
