Mold in Basements and Crawlspaces

The Dangers of Mold
Mold in basements and crawl spaces can be dangerous. Black mold is highly toxic and can lead to fatalities. A Mayo Clinic study report indicated 96% of chronic sinus problems are mold-related. Environmental and pollution control engineers consider mold to be a form of pollution due to its toxicity. When mold is detected in these areas, it is a result of high levels of dampness, moisture and/or humidity that combines to form a fungal growth if left without remediation. In some municipalities and states, the initial home inspection before final sale includes certifiable proof the home is mold-free. In states where regular high humidity is a problem, mold in basements and crawl spaces can become a regular problem without proper professional assistance to alleviate the cause of mold.

Mold Detection
Mold can easily become an "invisible invader" in areas of homes and business that have less regular use. To proper assess whether mold is a problem, there are various options that are used by mold detection specialists. Generally, instrumentation that can detect high levels of humidity are used to seek out areas where mold is most likely to generate. These devices employ a gauge similar to a thermometer with a visible readout that indicates the percentage of humidity in the home. From that point, it's a matter of full inspection the areas where mold is found. A range of mold samples are drawn and forwarded to a certified laboratory for initial testing. Once testing results are returned, the mold detection specialists can then submit a proposal for the work that will be required to remove it. This may entail obtaining a local municipality or state permit in order to comply with environmental regulations regarding mold remediation and removal. Mold remediation specialists should be licensed to perform removal. Ask whether mold removal permits are obtained by them or the homeowner.

Mold Removal Process
The process of mold removal depending on its levels of toxicity, is fairly simple when it's easily contained to a smaller areas of the structure. In the case of prior serious flooding where water levels cause mold damage inside walls and other large crevices, the process can be complex and costly. It may also necessitate restricting occupancy until it's determined that mold in the structure has returned to a safe and habitable level. No matter how serious the situation, engaging the best mold specialists remains the most effective means of avoiding illness.
