Information on Flood Clean Up

Returning to your home after a flood can be a very emotional moment. Seeing the house that you have lived in and raised your children in for years all but destroyed by flood damage can be devastating. But after the emotional trauma has subsided you realize you are going to have to do some serious flood clean up or have it done for you. There are water damage restoration companies out there that can do the job of restoring your home to a livable condition. These professionals know all the precautions to take when cleaning a home that’s been flooded.

However, if you decide do the flood cleanup yourself, whether you can’t afford to have it professionally done or some other reason, there are some things you need to know before you get started. You should be aware of the dangers of entering your home after it has been water damaged from flooding. The air in your home can be hazardous to your health due to mold. There may also be bugs and germs in the home. Germs thrive in standing water and the water could also be contaminated with sewage backup. You will want to keep children and pets out of the home until you have completed the cleanup and you are absolutely sure the home is safe.

If possible make sure all power and gas is turned off in the house and that the house is structurally safe before entering. Once you are in the house and ready to start the water damage clean up you should be wearing some protective gear. Here is a list of protective gear you will need:

N-95 respirator or half-face respirator with a High Efficiency Particulate filter
Goggles without vent holes
Head Gear
Plastic Gloves
Long Pants or Coveralls
Long-Sleeved Shirt
Boots

Now you are ready to start your flood clean up. Anything that got wet in the flood and can’t be cleaned, throw it away immediately. Things like carpets, rugs, furniture, mattresses and anything else you can see that can’t be cleaned. Remove any insulation and drywall that has been contaminated with floodwater. Clean, dry and disinfect all hard surfaces like showers, tubs, flooring, kitchen counter tops, appliances, sinks and anything else you can think of. Although you want to make sure you do a thorough cleaning job, be sure not to mix your cleaning products or add bleach to any other chemicals. It could be deadly.

After you have finished your flood clean up and some water damage repair, be sure to clean your hands thoroughly. You will also what to wash the clothes you’re wearing along with any clothing from the flood damage.

Whether you do it yourself or have a professional do it your house can be your home again even after flood damage.
